ESE Reading Rockets

PhotoThis fall at Smoky Row Elementary, Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation is launching a new Extended School Enrichment reading program called: “ESE Rocket Readers.” This program will be comprised of multiple elements.

On a daily basis, students will participate in 20 minutes of reading during Academic Assistance time. Students will record their time, number of pages, and a brief summary in a Reading Rockets recording book which will be kept on site. Students can follow their reading progress on our Reading Rockets bulletin board. Each student has a rocket with his or her name. As students accumulate time and pages, they will watch as their rocket blasts off into space! As rockets reach different levels of the atmosphere, students will earn multiple prizes such as bookmarks and books.

The Smoky Row ESE program will have a monthly reading theme. For example, November’s theme is “Fall into a Book.” Students will be encouraged to select a book about the fall or any related topic. At the end of the month, students will be given an opportunity to watch a short film based on the theme.

Many of the classroom teachers offer Scholastic Book orders to their students. Those students who do not have an opportunity to do so can also purchase Scholastic Books through our program as well. These forms are available on the Parent Info Table beginning November 9.

Throughout the year, ESE will also be offering other reading activities for the whole family. In the early spring, we will have an Author Night with a local author. Also in the spring, we will be holding a Build-A-Book Night.

As students are seen reading, their pictures will be displayed on our “Caught Reading” bulletin board. By rewarding students for participating in and enjoying reading, we hope to encourage life-long readers! We are excited to add all of these student and family reading events to our program this year! As a program, we look forward to your feedback and suggestions on these ideas and any others you may have!
