This year our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have done just that, they
have taken the challenge to become Junior Facilitators in the ESE
Before and After School Program at Forest Dale Elementary. Before
they can take that step they have to complete an eight week training
called Club Challenge.
Each week during club rotations our potential Junior Facilitators
meet to develop skills in teamwork, conflict resolution, problem solving
and character development. The R.I.C.H.E.R. Principles are the foundation
of this club. Every Monday one of the principles is introduced during
our awareness training. When students meet for Club Challenge they
first take a closer look at the principle of the week and how it would
apply to them as a Junior Facilitator. After a group discussion, students
take part in team building exercises.
Part of being a Junior Facilitator is being able to work as a cohesive
member of a team. Team members need to know they can count on
their partners. During the first club meeting students had to figure
a way to move nine people across the gym using only five objects;
the following week they used the Harmony Hoop and Magic Carpet. At
their last meeting they went on a trust walk. In teams of two, they
took turns wearing a blindfold while their teammate guided them through
the school and back to the LGI room. Most of the kids agreed it was
scary but they trusted their partner to get them through the course
safely.
After successful completion of Club Challenge, these students
will move into a role of responsibility as a Junior Facilitator. This
club will only be offered two times a year with our next Club
Challenge starting in January. It is the hope of the Forest Dale
ESE staff that more of our students will want to take the challenge
and become Junior Facilitators.
