Gold Standard of Personal Training

So, you want to start working with a personal trainer. Where should you start? How do you know what to look for? What qualities do good personal trainers have?

These are probably just a few of the many questions you have. At the Monon Community Center, we pride ourselves on an outstanding personal training program. We want to set the gold standard for personal training – 5 out of 5 stars. That’s why we want to share with you what a great personal trainer should look like. Here are the top five things your personal trainer should do for you:

1. Ask you about your fitness, nutrition and life goals

You most likely want to start working with a personal trainer because you have a goal in mind. Maybe you want to lose weight, be more knowledgeable about exercising or run a marathon. Whatever your goals are, your personal trainer should know! Once they know what your goals are, they can draw from their expertise and knowledge to create the best fitness and nutrition plan for you. Before you start exercising with your personal trainer, you should have a conversation about your goals. This demonstrates that your personal trainer is in tune with you and wants to develop a plan personalized for you.

Pro tip: Establish your fitness “why” before meeting with a personal trainer. This will help you both be on the same page about where you’ve been, where you’re at currently, and where you’re hoping to go with their help.

2. Ask you about your fitness and nutritional history

Your fitness and nutritional history are important. Your personal trainer should know about previous injuries or illnesses that may affect the way your body reacts to certain exercises. At the Monon Community Center, we value your safety. Our personal trainers want to ensure that your fitness and nutrition plan reflects not only your goals but your life.

3. Set attainable goals

Just like you, your personal trainer should want you to succeed! Throughout your fitness journey, your personal trainer should set attainable goals for you. This will help develop a mentality of success and give you a feeling of accomplishment as you work toward your long-term goals.

4. Encourage and drive you to do your best

Your personal trainer is there to drive you toward success, and along the way, they should also be your personal cheerleader. Your personal trainer will be there on the first rep and the last, and throughout your session, they should encourage you every step of the way. While they push you to your limits, you should be able to rest easy in the fact that they know what your limits are.

5. Make you feel comfortable

The gym can be an intimidating place. Working with a personal trainer? That can be even more intimidating. But, it doesn’t have to be! Your personal trainer is there to help make the gym a comfortable place to be. Your personal trainer should also help you build confidence not only with the equipment you use and exercises you perform but also in yourself!
