City Center Tunnel Rendering

City Center Tunnel Mural Project

Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation is working with the Carmel High School Art Department to design and paint murals inside four Monon Greenway pedestrian tunnels.

The first tunnel to be painted is at City Center Drive, and prep work is well underway. CHS junior Caroline Hammonds created the winning design, titled “Ethereal Rapsody,” which features musical elements within an Indiana sunset. Hammonds said she listened to classical music and the song “Girl of the Year” by musical duo Beach House as she created the design. She said she was inspired to capture the beauty in a state that doesn’t have natural wonders such as mountains and oceans.

I hope Hammond’s work inspires the Carmel community for years to come.Michael Klitzing, Director OF Carmel clay parks & recreation

Klitzing says CCPR aims to have one tunnel painted each year.

The tunnel,  which is near the Center for the Performing Arts, closed in mid-April for repair work and to prepare the surfaces for the mural.

Timeline

City Center Tunnel Rendering

Installation of the mural will begin on or around June 21. The goal is to have the mural completed in time for CarmelFest.

Volunteer Opportunities

The mural will be painted by Carmel High School students and alumni of the art program. Currently we anticipate enough students to fill all timeslots needed to help paint the mural. If you are interested in helping paint the mural, check back here periodically to see if any timeslots open up for members of the public to assist.

Donations

Donations are currently being accepted to help fund Hammond’s mural project. If you’re interested in donating and would like more information, please contact Michael at mklitzing@carmelclayparks.com.
